百鬼巡礼 第一夜 ［びろーんの巻］
＊「お寺の音楽会『誰そ彼 vol.4』用に作成した、光明寺仏教青年会によるフリーペーパー"busse posse issue"に書いた原稿。百鬼巡礼という、お寺に関連のありそうな妖怪を紹介するコーナー。

百鬼巡礼 第一夜
今回はお寺の音楽会という事で、妖怪【びろーん】を紹介しようと思います。
【びろーん】：別名ぬりぼとけ、全身がこんにゃくのようにぶよぶよしていて、しっぽで人の顔や首をなでる。びろびろびろーんという呪文を唱えて、仏様に化けようとして失敗したという。塩をかけると消えるらしい。（『いちばんくわしい日本妖怪図鑑』より）
…さて、妖怪を紹介しましょうと言って【びろーん】とは人をなめているのかと、言われてしまいそうですね。実際問題この妖怪、つっこみどころは盛り沢山です。まず名前が妖しい、[ろーん]という音引きからして歴史が古くなさそう。そして[呪文]を唱えて[仏様]に化けるというのも何だかめちゃくちゃです。実は、この妖怪はちょっと困り者の妖怪なのです。先ほど、妖怪の成り立ちを説明しましたが（エントリー【誰そ彼草】参照）その中に“妖怪作家による創作”というのも挙げる事が出来ます。古くは『画図百鬼夜行』で有名な鳥山石燕、最近で言うと水木しげるサンとか。
この妖怪は佐藤有文の『いちばんくわしい日本妖怪図鑑』に出ています。この本は所謂子供向けの妖怪本で、難しい説明を省いたキャラクター化された妖怪がわかりやすく紹介されている本です。デフォルメ化に際して実際の一次文献を参考にしたものであれば広い範疇で妖怪と称しても構わないのでしょうが、この【びろーん】は明らかに最近作り出されている、元ネタが見当たらないらしいのです。しかも、厄介な事に鳥山石燕の創った妖怪【塗仏(ぬりぼとけ)】を[別名]として取り入れてしまっていて、形も微妙に似ている…。そして形が面白い事から水木しげるサンが漫画に登場させてしまったり、荒俣宏サンがTVで紹介してしまったらしいのです。現在の妖怪研究家達がいくら探しても元ネタがわからないので、佐藤先生本人にインタビューしてみても「江戸だったか平安だったかの絵巻に書いてあったんですよ」とおっしゃっている…。江戸と平安なんて範囲が広過ぎるからいかにも怪しいし、なんとも対処に困ってしまっているというお話なんです。研究している人が困ったってそれを調べるのが研究者の仕事だと言われればそれまでですが、例えば後続の人が、石燕の描いた【塗仏】を調べようとした場合にまた紛らわしい分岐ができてしまう事もありえます。博物学的な見地から捉えれば、並べてしまえばそれまでヨの問題なのですが、妖怪好きとしては、過去にも現在にも創作され続けている妖怪達を、何処までが妖怪とみなすかという線引きでも悩んでいるのです。その中でもこの「びろーん問題」は有名な話らしいです。（詳しくは新潮社『妖怪馬鹿』参照）
曖昧な境界を漂ってしまっている【びろーん】の目を見ていたらだんだんぼんやりとしてきてしまい、それが夕方の心持に似ていたのでこの場で紹介しようと思いました。みなさんも本日は本堂で怪音・奇音を聴きながら、目を瞑って唱えてみてください、「びろびろびろ～ん」と。▼
